Human-in-the-loop

Human-in-the-loop means a person reviews or approves an AI system's work at defined points before it takes effect.

Human-in-the-loop means a person reviews or approves an AI system's work at defined points before it takes effect.

Fully automatic AI is fine for low-stakes work, like sorting an inbox. It is not fine for a refund, a legal reply or a message to your largest customer. Human-in-the-loop design puts a person at the points where a mistake would be costly.

The skill is choosing those points. Too many and the AI saves no time; too few and you carry risk you cannot see. A useful rule: approve anything that leaves the company, spends money or changes a customer's record, and let the rest run.

On Staff.work, this is part of the job. Every staffer asks a manager before sensitive actions, and every workflow can include a human approval step. The approval, and who gave it, is recorded in the work log, which is the evidence you need to relax a rule later.
